Website Number 1: The debate over the atomic bombs concerns the ethical, legal and military controversies surrounding the US. On July 1945, President Harry Truman, issued the Potsdam Declaration. It stated the terms for Japan for when they surrender. It outlined the terms of surrender for the Empire of Japan as agreed upon at the Potsdam Conference. This ultimatum stated if Japan did not surrender, she would face "prompt and utter destruction. Some debaters focus on the presidential decision- making process, and others focus on if the bombings were the reason Japanese surrendered. However, a primary and continuing focus has been on the role of the bombings in Japan's surrender and the U.S.'s justification for them based upon the premise that the bombings precipitated the surrender. This is a very popular debate when it comes to the subject of the atomic bomb. People want to know was it essential to use for the Japanese to surrender. People that support the bombing are strong believers that the bomb is the reason why the Japanese surrendered. They feel that there would've continued to be invasions and they wouldnt have surrendered unless something destructive occurred. Those who don't support it argue it was a war crime to kill so many innocent people and that it was "immoral". Some feel that it was an action of "State Terrorism". People feel that the bomb wasn't necessary to use at all. They state that people that have no desires to fight this war should sacrifice themselves rather than shoot a bomb. I am surprised that very worthy people—but people who in most cases had no intention of proceeding to the Japanese front themselves—should adopt the position that rather than throw this bomb, we should have sacrificed a million American and a quarter of a million British lives. People who favor in the bombing feel that it was an action that was going to happen anyways with both sides.
Website Number 2: The atomic bomb was necessary to end the war with Japan at the earliest possible moment. By the early summer of 1945, Japanese leaders knew they could not win. But they fought on in hopes of securing better surrender terms. Harry Truman tried to come up with several ways for the Japanese to surrender the war. Truman considered several ways to convince Japan to quit the war: 1) intensifying the already heavy bombing of Japanese cities; 2) waiting for the Soviet Union, an ally in defeating Germany, to join the war against Japan; 3) allowing Japan's emperor, Hirohito, to remain on his throne; and 4) invading Japan. All of these posed serious political, military, and social risks. More than 55,000 Americans already had died fighting the Pacific. An invasion would've costed more lives and that wasn't a route that Harry Truman wanted to take. The atomic bomb was the cause of their surrender. When the atomic bomb became available in July 1945, it appeared to be the most promising way to end the war as soon as possible and without the drawbacks of the alternatives. The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and then Nagasaki persuaded Emperor Hirohito, who had wavered for weeks, that the war must end immediately. This bombing and the soviets invading it brought Japan to surrender within a few days. Some may say that the bomb was necessary because Japan was already defeated. Eisenhower said the bomb was "no longer mandatory as a measure to save American lives." At one point after the war he said bluntly, "It wasn't necessary to hit them with that awful thing.
Website Number 3: Ever since the bombing of Japanese cities, a lot of people have engaged in a controversy about the atomic bombs. Months before the bomb, War department officials worried about the political and military problems raised by the bombs. This possibility of the hydrogen bombs scared people The possibility of enormously powerful hydrogen bombs, enormous military potential, the limits of secrecy, the danger of a global arms race, and the need for international exchange of information and international inspection to stem dangerous nuclear competition. People looked upon this action as terrorist bombing . The bomb couldn't choose what it fired at so people that were innocent ended up dying. People have wrote documents supporting their arguments.
